Dear Friend,
The story of the Samaritan woman in John chapter 4 is one saturated with precious truths. Jesus, upon encountering this woman, requests a drink of water from her. A few verses on, He declares His ability to quench her spiritual thirst, being both the possessor and provider of eternal life. Here we see a clear distinction between Christ, the Son of Man and Christ, the Son of God, Jesus being simultaneously both God and flesh. The flesh-man of Jesus was experiencing physical thirst, while the God-man was the satisfier of a much deeper need, the need for reconciliation with God. We see here a clear distinction between the physical and the spiritual.
How many people try to satisfy a spiritual need through physical means? A lack of peace and contentment is combated through a variety of “antidotes” – drugs, relationships, money, fame, success, alcohol, possessions, sex – the list is extensive. Such is the plague of mankind, a relentless search for a physical solution to a gaping wound of restlessness and emptiness within. Physical life is not possible without physical water. Likewise, true spiritual life and fulfillment is not possible without the living, spiritual waters poured into our beings by Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He is the way, the truth and the life, without Him, the result is none other than spiritual death. Do not run to the world to satisfy the emptiness you feel within. Run to Jesus, He alone can quench that kind of thirst!
